The Duchess DJ – The Modern L Interview
“The Duchess” is such an unusual name, how did that title come about?
When I was looking for a DJ name I thought it might be a good idea to put it out there to friends and family. I had racked my brain for months looking for something unique and elegant. One night at a typical South African braai, the topic of my DJ name came up once again. Ideas started flying around and I was pleasantly surprised to hear what my friends thought of me. There’s a saying that goes ” by your actions we shall know you “. Finally in a whirl wind of suggestions . . . The Duchess . . . was born. That moment, right there was the nail on the head. Unusual, elegant and exactly what I was looking for. A name that I believe will define me and my music in the future. A name that will be synonymous with my personality and contribution to the music industry!
Tell us about your best and worst gig thus far and what makes them stand out.
Lets start with worst! I hate ending on a bad note. Picture this : 1 minute and 20 seconds to mixing into the 2nd track, the equipment is suddenly temperamental and murphy, as he would have it, takes a full on swing at me for the rest of my set! Shattered nerves, planning and training go flying out the window and panic sets in. Let me tell you, that night I learnt the art of improvisation and how to look really calm and in control, while my heart sat in my throat, pounding uncontrollably!!
